“The Friendly Church” |
A recent independent article, published by The Missourian, characterized St. John as “the friendly church.” We at St. John believe that, like the faithful hymn goes, we have indeed found a friend in Jesus, and moreover that Jesus calls us to be friends unto others. You will find a friend in Christ at St. John, but you will also find another multitude of friends and faces to cherish as God’s people. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!

“Our Mission” |
Like any Christian church, our mission is to follow Jesus, who we confess to be the Christ of God. Within our calling to this greater mission, we have adopted the following mission statement:
“St. John is an open and accepting Christian environment that stimulates spiritual growth and relationships where God’s love and our unique gifts are celebrated through worship, ongoing missions, education and fellowship.”

“Our History” |
The first meeting of St. John was held in St. Clair in May of 1906. We turned 100 years old in 2006! In late 1906, five lots on Hibbard Street were purchased in St. Clair from Mr. John Barber for the amount of $700. The first church was finished in 1907 with Rev. Theodore Braun as the first resident pastor. In 1908 the church was incorporated, and in 1909 the church affiliated itself with the German Evangelical Synod of North America. In 1934 the German Evangelical Church in America and the German Reformed Church in America merged, and St. John became “St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church.” In 1957 the Evangelical and Reformed Church merged with the Congregational Christian Church to form the United Church of Christ. Ever since St. John has been known as “St. John United Church of Christ.” The current church, located at 960 East Gravois, was built and dedicated in 1959. The church property comprises 5 acres with four buildings, the church, the parsonage and two garages. Long-live St. John. |
